2023 Training Camp | Denver Broncos | High Hopes & Key Comebacks

As the 2023 NFL season approaches, Denver Broncos fans are buzzing with excitement and anticipation for the team's training camp. The Broncos are looking to bounce back from a challenging 2022 season, and several significant changes during the offseason have raised hopes for a successful campaign. Let's take a closer look at what to expect during training camp and the potential impact of key players returning from injuries and the arrival of a new head coach.

Promising Comebacks: Javonte Williams and Tim Patrick Return from Torn ACL

One of the most encouraging story-lines for the Broncos is the return of running back Javonte Williams and wide receiver Tim Patrick. Both players suffered torn ACL injuries during the 2022 season, and their absence undoubtedly impacted the team's performance. However, the Broncos' medical staff has been impressed with their recovery progress, and all signs point to their full participation in training camp.

Javonte Williams, the talented young running back, had a strong rookie season before his injury. The Grim Reapers’ ability to break tackles and gain tough yards will be a vital asset for the Broncos' offense. Tim Patrick, known for his reliable hands and big-play potential, will add depth to a receiving corps already featuring Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy. You also have starting left tackle Garrett Bolles returning from a gnarly ankle injury that cost

him almost half of the 2022 season. The Broncos will be hoping with improvement around him they will get Bolles back to his former pro-bowl self with new o-line coach Zach Strief.

Revamped Offensive Line: Mike McGlinchey and Ben Powers Join the Ranks

Joining Bolles in the trenches and addressing one of the team's most pressing needs, the Broncos made significant moves to revamp their offensive line during the offseason. The signing of Mike McGlinchey, formerly with the San Francisco 49ers, and Ben Powers via the Baltimore Ravens offensive line development program, has infused the unit with fresh talent and experience.

Mike McGlinchey brings stability and skill to the right tackle position, and his offseason emphasis on his pass protection abilities will be crucial in supporting the Broncos' star quarterback. Ben Powers, known for his tenacity and versatility, will likely strengthen the interior of the line, providing valuable support for the running game and only allowing a single sack in 2022.

A New Leader at the Helm: Sean Payton Takes Charge

Perhaps the most intriguing development of the offseason was the Broncos' trade for head coach Sean Payton from the New Orleans Saints. Payton, a highly accomplished and respected coach, led the Saints to numerous playoff appearances and a Super Bowl victory during his tenure. His arrival in Denver has ignited optimism among players and fans alike, with expectations of a more dynamic and innovative offensive approach.

Payton's offensive prowess, combined with veteran savvy of Russell Wilson, the young talentsof Javonte Williams/Greg Dulcich and the returning Tim Patrick, has the potential to elevate the Broncos' scoring ability to new heights. Additionally, Payton's experience and leadership will be invaluable in guiding the team through tough challenges and critical moments. New owner and CEO Greg Penner told reporters on Wednesday July 26 he thought Sean had been “tremendous” and “He came in and right away changed the tone in the building. He sets very high expectations. Everybody knows that they are going to held accountable.”

The new head coach was also very outspoken about last year's coaching job by now Jets' offensive coordinator, Nathaniel Hackett, saying it was "...one of the worst coaching jobs in the NFL." And there was "...20 dirty hands." A day later, Payton apologized for these comments, saying "I had my FOX hat on." But it was too late for new Jets' QB Aaron Rodgers to slap-back, saying "Keep my coach's name out of your mouth." New beef in the NFL? Maybe. But there will be "boos" rained upon Hackett, Rodgers and the Jets come week 5 of the regular season as New York visits Denver on October 8th.

Can Russell Wilson Bounce Back?

The Broncos' quarterback position was also a topic of concern during the 2022 season. Acquiring Russell Wilson in a trade last year, the Broncos hoped to elevate their passing game to the elite level. However, Wilson faced challenges with injuries and adjusting to a new offensive system, leading to a, we’ll say, somewhat underwhelming season.

Now, with a revamped offensive line and the guidance of offensive guru Sean Payton, Russell

Wilson has a golden opportunity to bounce back in 2023. Wilson's talent, experience, and leadership remain unquestionable, and if he can establish a strong rapport with his receiving targets, the Broncos' offense could be a force to be reckoned with.

In conclusion, the 2023 Denver Broncos training camp promises to be an exciting time for fans and players alike. The return of Javonte Williams and Tim Patrick, combined with the revamped offensive line and the addition of head coach Sean Payton, has created a sense of hope and anticipation. With Russell Wilson poised for a comeback, the Broncos are setting their sights on a successful season and a return to playoff contention. After head coach Sean Payton’s candid interview with The Athletic where he tore into the previous coaching staff stating he would be “pissed off if this is not a playoff team.” How can you expect anything less without disappointment?

There is going to be a microscope on the Mile High City’s favorite franchise. All eyes will be on training camp to see how these pieces come together and set the stage for an exhilarating season of football in Denver.
