College Basketball | Men's & Women's Season Outlook
The College Basketball Season is close to wrapping up and last week in the men's and women's college basketball landscape, there were 2 games that stood out last weekend in the world of college basketball both in the men and women basketball fabric.
First and foremost how about those Auburn Tigers who showed truly why they are #1 by going on the road to face their archrival Alabama. When you think of Auburn vs Alabama in a sporting sense you usually think of college football with all of the tradition in late November of the Iron Bowl. But this season in the college basketball perspective, the Auburn Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide were the 2 top ranked teams as #1 and #2 in the country which made this matchup a fascinating and titillating must watch for the casual fan of college basketball let alone the Auburn and Alabama fan.
Overall Auburn handled their business winning by score of 94-85. Senior Forward Johni Broome scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Auburn. But what stood out in this matchup was the incredible play and contribution from the bench. There were 3 players from the Auburn bench that was instrumental in this big win on the road against Alabama. Senior Forward Chaney Johnson scored 14 points then there was true freshman Tahaad Pettiford from Jersey City, New Jersey who had 13 points alongside him was Senior Guard Chad Baker-Mazara who scored 15 points. Overall these triple threat of the sixth man perspective combined for 42 points off the bench. Moving forward the Auburn Tigers proved in this magnitude of a matchup that they can possibly win it all this season of college basketball.
Then in the women's college basketball landscape, the #7 UConn Huskies beat #4 South Carolina Gamecocks on the road by score of 87-58. What made this win impressive for the Huskies was the fact that they snapped the 71-game home winning streak that South Carolina had leading up to this matchup. The victory also marked the largest road win for any Division I program over a top five team since 2009 when the Huskies beat #2 North Carolina alongside the fact the Gamecocks biggest home loss since 2008. Guard Azzi Fudd of UConn had 28 points including 6 three point shots made. Is this a changing of the guard for South Carolina or is it an aberration for the team who had just a bump on the road.
