Detroit Pistons Set A Not-So-Good Record

After losing to the Brooklyn Nets on December 26, 2023, the Detroit Pistons have officially set the NBA record for most consecutive losses at 27. No one expected the Pistons to be the 1-seed or win the NBA finals, but this wasn’t expected either. On paper, the Pistons have a good roster. The team was built around their 3 young stars, Cade Cunningham, Ausar Thompson, and Jalen Duren. They also have an elite scorer and veteran presence in Bojan Bogdanović so what is the problem?

One of the many problems with this Detroit Pistons team is their age. The Pistons have the 8th youngest roster in the NBA. Out of the 10 youngest teams in the league, only 3 of them are in playoff contention. However, when it comes to the top 10 oldest teams in the NBA, 7 of them are in playoff contention. The Detroit Pistons only have 3 players over the age of 30. We can all understand the process of wanting to build around young players and develop them. That said, having veterans in your locker room is essential for properly developing young talent.

The Detroit Pistons brought in the 2021-22 coach of the year, Monty Williams, on a 6- year 78.5 million dollar deal, making him the 2nd highest-paid coach in the NBA. The Pistons signed Monty Williams because of his success in Phoenix, but he has been far from that. His record with the Detroit Pistons is 2-28, and now many questions are being asked about his fit. This year's draft class isn’t as good as years prior. 4 of the top 5 recruits are foreign players with limited film. This means that tanking doesn’t make sense because, as of right now there isn’t a generational prospect in the class. The Pistons have 2 options going forward, will the team make a big

move at the deadline or fire Monty 1 year into his 6-year deal?
