Hurricane Tyra Black Ends Waters Triple Crown Streak

Hurricane Tyra Black: Carvana PPA Tour

The Carvana PPA rolled into Southern California last week for the 2023 Takeya Showcase and was full of surprises. Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters were upset in singles, bringing the two untouchable players back down to earth! This kicked the door open for all the other professional touring players considering Anne Leigh Waters was out, Lea Jansen retired and Parenteau and Tereschenko did not participate.

Hurricane Tyra Black shocked the pickleball world by dominating Waters 11-3 in the third game to end Waters’ reign in women’s singles. This also brought Waters’ streak of six consecutive triple crowns to a screeching halt. Black continued to work her way through Stratmen and Newell to get her first gold medal in a PPA tournament! There have been people doubting Black and her intentions since she switched from tennis to pickleball, but I think she is a great competitor, and it is her time to shine in the PPA. This win could be just what the PPA women need to even the playing field! Hurricane Tyra Black slayed the giant! This should give her the momentum and confidence to take the league by storm and make a great rivalry that people love to tune in and watch.

Waters has been the most dominate player in women’s pickleball but maybe this a chink in her armor, or a cheat code for her fellow competitors. Maybe just good luck! Either way it’s nice to see the underdog have their day and hopefully we will see some of the new faces of pickleball throwing their weight around and competing for titles. Everyone loves an underdog story.
