NFL Week 1 Overview & Week 2 Picks of the Week | College Football Week 1 Overview & Week 2 Picks of the Week
The College Football Season of 2024 was in full swing last week in Week 1 as the majority of the college football teams started the new season. What had stood out so far is Florida State is 0-2 after starting the season preseason number 10 until now being unranked in the polls. Florida State’s offense has only scored a grand total of 34 points. The offense scored 21 points against Georgia Tech but only 13 points against Boston College.
Also the Florida State defense has been a liability especially stopping the run in the first 2 games against Georgia Tech and Boston College. Georgia Tech rushing offense ran roughshod against the Florida State run defense for 190 yards but it got worse this past Monday Night when the run defense allowed 263 yards rushing. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has not distinguished himself as a top flight quarterback and this is his 3rd college football team he has played on because he began at Clemson, Oregon State and now Florida State.
Overall Florida State’s playoff chances is on life support for now. Other notable standouts from Week 1 was Georgia dominating the Clemson Tigers by score of 34-3. In a game that was only 6-0 at halftime, Georgia was able to show why they are preseason number one with Quarterback Carson Beck throwing for 278 yards and 2 touchdown passes. Wide Receivers Colbie Young and London Humphreys caught a touchdown pass each from Beck. Defensively Georgia defense is always strong and stout as usual only allowing 3 points against Clemson.
Clemson continues their decline from being elite with this loss maybe Coach Dabo Swinney is not doing enough in the transfer portal to keep up and compete with the elite programs in college football. Is the University of Miami back on their way to national prominence after a blowout win against archrival Florida on the road winning by score of 41-17. Quarterback Cam Ward who made his debut against the Gators by throwing for 385 yards and 3 touchdown passes. It is premature to assume that Miami is back to relevance in college football but only if they win the ACC, earn a playoff spot or win a national championship that the U is truly back. Only time will tell during the regular season.
Fast Forward to Week 2 of the college football season only 2 notable games that stands out and first and foremost Texas vs Michigan in the Big House at Michigan Stadium. This is only the second meeting between these 2 teams. I got Texas winning 24-20 because Quarterback Quinn Ewers of Texas is better than the Quarterbacks on Michigan plus the 23 game home winning streak by Michigan will be snapped. One nugget is that a season ago Texas went into Alabama and beat Alabama to snap their 21 game home winning streak. Keep your eyes on that.
Tennessee faces NC State on a neutral field tomorrow night keep your eyes on Quarterback Nico Iamaleava of Tennessee who played exceptional last week against Chattanooga by setting a school record in the first half with 314 passing yards. I like Tennessee to win 28-17.
Let's look at the NFL as the season began on Thursday night between the Baltimore Ravens and the 2 time defending champions The Kansas City Chiefs who is looking for a 3-peat an unprecedented feat. Chiefs was able to win 27-20 despite having a 27-17 lead the Ravens was able to come back and cut the lead to 27-20 but it all came down to the last drive of the game with Quarterback Lamar Jackson throwing into the back of the endzone to Tight End Isaiah Likely who made the catch but one of his toes hit the white line so the touchdown didn't count. The Chiefs just know how to beat the Ravens these 2 teams may face each other in the postseason only time will tell.
Rookie Isaiah Worthy of The Chiefs had a stellar debut with a 21 yard touchdown run on a reverse and a touchdown catch displaying his breakaway speed. Wide Receiver Rashee Rice caught 7 passes for 103 yards but maybe he shouldn't be playing after the car wreck he was involved in the city of Dallas no punishment was laid down by the NFL as of yet. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes should be excellent with Worthy at Wide Receiver in terms of chemistry alongside Tight End Travis Kelce.
Now the Week 1 Sunday slate in the NFL, the 2 games that stand out is the Dallas Cowboys vs Cleveland Browns and the nightcapper between the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Rams in a rematch from last season's playoff matchup which the Lions won 24-23. On Monday Night, there is the New York Jets vs San Francisco 49ers. Can Quarterback Aaron Rodgers of the Jets be healthy for a full season? Can the 49ers avoid the commonplace Super Bowl hangover after losing to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl? I got the Cowboys over the Browns because I trust Quarterback Dak Prescott over Quarterback Deshaun Watson. The Lions will beat the Rams at home on Sunday night because of Quarterback Jared Goff and the weaponry of the offense especially Wide Receiver Jameson Williams look for Williams to possibly be a game breaker in this matchup.
I will go with the 49ers against the Jets at home because yes the Jets have a good defense and talent on the offensive end in Wide Receiver Garrett Wilson but Rodgers has to prove that he is durable. The 49ers should win by a field goal:24-21. The running game of Christian McCaffrey and play action passes from Quarterback Brock Purdy should be enough to win a close game.
