Texas Longhorns 2023 Championship Run Starts Today

QB Quinn Ewers v TCU 2022

The Texas Longhorns open their season at home on today @ 3:30 p.m. EST (2:30 CT, 1:30 MST, 12:30 PST) against Rice University. Week one of college football is usually a snooze when it comes to competitive competition, but everyone knows it is just a way to ease into the season ahead. There has been an exponential amount of buzz around the Longhorns leading up to the season. Quinn Ewers is locked in and ready to make his mark in Longhorn’s football history with a Big 12 Championship. The Longhorns have not won the Big 12 Championship since 2009 and hopefully this year will break the drought. This could be a great opportunity for Ewers to increase his draft stock for the NFL and end the Big 12 era in style. A Big 12 championship will be the ultimate mic drop before heading to the SEC in 2024. Now is the time for Ewers and the Longhorns to rattle cages and let the SEC know they are coming in strong, and the Longhorn football program is back!

Quinn Ewers came into the 2023 practices sans magnificent mullet and ready to step up and show people why he is a five-star recruit. The coaching staff has been impressed by his maturity and leadership at practice while the national media is talking about him potentially being a top ten pick if he can have a successful season. Ewers has plenty of motivation this year and the Longhorns have Maalik Murphy and football royalty Arch Manning waiting in the wings. That is a solid quarterback room and Coach Sarkisian has praised them for how well they get along and support each other’s development.

The team is returning ten out of eleven starters from last season with the only question being who will fill Bijan Robinson’s shoes at running back? In a recent interview with Colin Cowherd, Longhorns Head Coach Steve Sarkisian addressed the running back question by stating, “We have a talented room, it’s not going to be about ability. It’s who gives us the best opportunity to have success. Is it one of them, two of them, is it possibly three of them, that’s what we have to find out.” Cedric (CJ) Baxter seems like the primary back but Savion Red and Keilan Robinson have been impressive so lets see what Saturday brings with who and how they use these backs.

Playing against Rice this week will be a good opportunity for the Longhorns to test out the running backs and combinations of running backs together before their week 2 match up at Alabama. The week 2 matchup will be a huge game for both teams considering the AP Top 25 ranks Alabama 4th and Texas 11th and a great indicator for how each team’s season will go. Texas will be seeking revenge for last season’s nail-biter loss to Alabama. The Texas Longhorns should roll Rice University this Saturday, unless something catastrophic happens. This is the warmup game before we get down and dirty in Tuscaloosa! Hook’em Horns!
