The 2023 Colorado Rockies' Season | So Far Review

Rocky Start to Colorado Season. At the almost 30% completion mark of the season (28% to be exact) feels like a good time to review the Colorado Rockies 2023 season so far.

The Rockies have shown signs of improvement after a rough start to their 2023 season. While still struggling with consistency on both offense and defense, key players have stepped up their game recently, resulting in some much-needed wins. Moreover, the young players have continued to impress, giving fans hope for what's to come. With a lot of games still left in the season, the Rockies' fate is far from decided, and there's reason to be optimistic for the future.

The Colorado Rockies have been in the basement of the NL West for pretty much the entire season to this point with a 19-25 overall record. The team has struggled to find consistency both at home (10-12) and on the road (9-13). The Rockies have seen injuries to key players such as German Marquez, CJ Cron, Brendan Rodgers and Antonio Senzatela, among others, which has further impacted their performance. The injuries have ranged from the terribly fluky (Marquez/Senzatela torn/sprained UCL) to simply terrifying (Ryan Feltner, Fractured Skull).

Offensively, the Rockies have struggled to produce runs, ranking near the bottom of the league in several categories. Their highest ranking is batting average at 12th in the league with a .256 clip. However, they have shown flashes of potential, with players like rookies Ezekiel Tovar (3rd on team with 19 RBI/2nd on team with .987 FPCT) and Brenton Doyle (leads team with 6 stolen bases in only 13 games played, multiple web gems) making significant contributions both offensively and defensively.

On the pitching side, the Rockies have had some standout performances from Kyle Freeland and Antonio Senzatela. However, inconsistencies from other starters and a inconsistent middle of the bullpen have led to some disappointing losses.

Despite these challenges, the Rockies remain focused on improvement over the rest of the season. Fans can look forward to seeing how the team will continue to develop and compete in

the coming weeks and months. I am not here to paint a rosy picture that sees the Rockies become this year’s Orioles that can take the league by surprise. They haven't had the wave of youth take over the way Baltimore's did last year even though there may be some reinforcements on the horizon.

Looking ahead, the Rockies will need to find ways to stay competitive in a tough NL West division that has been owned by California for years. They have some tough series coming up against the Rangers (1st in AL West) and Marlins (2nd in NL East), but also have some winnable games against teams like the Royals (last in AL Central) and Giants (just 1.5 games ahead of Rockies in West). The team will need to continue to rely on their key players, while also finding ways to generate more offense and consistency on the mound. Additionally, the Rockies will need to address their injury woes to stay competitive long-term.

Overall, the Colorado Rockies' 2023 season has been marked by its ups and downs. They started 13-21 before going 6-4 over their last ten to crawl to their current record of 19-25 just 1.5 games out of 3rd in the NL West. While the team has faced significant challenges, there have also been moments of promise and potential. With a focus on improvement and development, the Rockies still have plenty of opportunities to turn their season around and emerge as contenders in the years to come.

Although we have seen the long awaited debuted of former number one prospect Riley Pint and the unexpectedly quick debut Friday May 19, 2023, of 2019 compensatory pick Karl Kauffman. We have yet to see top prospect Zac Veen make his debut that I anticipate we will see in a few weeks when the Rockies can avoid starting his arbitration clock. We have also seen Michael Toglia get his call after CJ Cron went down with injury. Austin Wynns is proving to be a nice find off waivers as a good back up to starting catcher Elias Diaz. Diaz is a major bright spot as he is having a career year leading all major league catchers with a .331 batting average and second with 11 base runners caught stealing and 45.8% caught stealing.

The Colorado Rockies have faced some tough hurdles this season, but the players remain

dedicated to improving and competing at the highest level. While their offensive struggles and

injuries have impacted their overall performance, standout performances from key players offer a

glimpse of what this team is capable of. Rockies fans can look forward to watching their team continue to grow and develop throughout the rest of the season.
