The Walking Dead: Dead City | "Who's There?" | Episode 2 Recap & Review [Spoilers Ahead!]

At the end of episode one “Old Acquaintances”, we saw a woman blow out the match that was leading Maggie and Negan down hallways and through a building in which trying to escape Marshal Armstrong. Now in episode two, titled “Who’s There”, we learn that lady’s name is Esther, who only speaks Hebrew. Esther takes Maggie’s bag and leads them up an elevator shaft and zip-lines to another building, where Maggie and Negan eventually run into the “tribespeople”, who is called that by EP and show-runner of Dead City, Eli Jorne.

Of course the tribespeople don’t trust Maggie and Negan, so like the classic lines from the original series, Negan tries laying on the charm and charisma, but they get thrown into a dank-looking bathroom. While they hang out there, we see Ginny, the girl who was with Negan in episode one, about to attend class in the new Hilltop. Obviously, Ginny is still acting like Newt from Alien and not saying to much, but, we finally get a flashback!

This flashback isn’t as juicy as I perhaps needed/wanted, but hey, I’ll take what I can get. As one of the people in new Hilltop gives Ginny some food and leaves the room- that room turns into a scene in which we see Maggie come in and talk to Hershel. Hershel is probably in his pre-teen to teenage years and much like adolescent Groot, very moody. He seems to be sketching something or someone and abruptly storms out of the room when Maggie compliments…whatever he was doing. I know, not much of a flashback, but I’m assuming it means something.

We touched on the Croan in episode one, who is a former savior in Negan’s group from the OS. Negan starts to explain how he came to meet the Croan, this isn’t a flashback but this story is just as juicy as the flashback we did get. Negan goes on to tell Maggie that the Croan was struggling just like everyone else so he decides to let him in and eventually gets promoted to…well torturer. Negan shares the moment in which he knew the Croan was bad news, or as Negan puts it, “a rabid dog”. Negan wanted to let a woman found in a car outside of the Sanctuary go, but the Croan had other plans. Negan tried shooting the Coran but missed and shot his ear off instead. Maggie says “So he’s gonna want to kill you?” To which Negan replies, “He sure is”. Maggie is clearly aggravated by this new piece of information that she probably should have known before embarking on this adventure together. I would have loved to see that story/flashback on the screen.

Now we meet the Burazi. Which is Croatian for “brothers”, get it? The Croan, Croatian? Anyway, these people show up and drive the tribespeople out of their hiding spot, they have what seems to be motorcycle helmets on fitted with saws, knifes and razor blades sticking out for head-butting walkers- which is a cool new way to kill walkers that we’ve never seen before. If you’re into head-butting of

course. Then we get to see good ol, classic Negan once again. He was able to grab one of the Burazi and is going to use him to give the tribespeople a bit of time to

think of a new plan. He grabs this Burazi person and slams his head through three windows saying “knock knock” ..and again “knock knock”. Eventually Negan has to finish the joke himself; “Knock knock. Who’s there? Butter. Butter who? Well you butter get out your umbrellas ‘cause it about to goddamn rain.” Classic. Negan then proceeds to cut the man’s throat and having it literally “rain” on his fellow Burazi below. Then of course Negan slices the man’s stomach having all of his intestines fall out then just flips the guy over the railing onto a man who Negan calls out for having a neckbeard and a rat-tail. Negan did not realize Maggie witnessed all of this and is not thrilled, but maybe this is the man she needs to help rescue her son.

When we return to Marshal Armstrong, he gets caught in a net, a trap set up by I’m assuming the Burazi. We get to see these helmets in full-force as the Croan kills off some walkers but head-butting them. He gets Armstrong out of the trap, giggles and says, “You’re safe now.” The Croan is obviously very witty and very smart, I mean he was/is a scientist. So I’m assuming he already knows what he’s going to use Armstrong and what for. As we learned from Negan a few scenes back, the Croan doesn’t seem like he listens to reason that much, unless its his own reason.

Overall, this episode was a solid A-, or a 9/10, personally. Like I said I liked Negan’s flashback story more than the actually flashback they showed with Maggie and Hershel at new Hilltop, and would have loved to see that shown in this episode. But I feel like we get to see other flashbacks if we saw one already in episode two. I like how this new “world” is expanding as now we have been introduced to three different groups of people, not including Maggie, Negan, Hershel and Ginny. - New Babylon, the tribespeople and the Burazi. It will be interesting to see how Maggie and Negan mesh with the tribespeople as they are already grateful that Negan helped them, but also apparently willing to help them get closer to trying to save Hershel. On the other hand, how the Croan is going to

use Marshal Armstrong is what I am most waiting to find out.

By the way, if you’ve listened to the “Stalking Dead” on our network before, we used to do a “can you find the name of the episode” segment. Well, we are going to play that again. The name of the episode is called “Who’s There?” Which appeared after Negan was taunting thr Burazi with his “Knock, knock” joke.
