The Walking Dead | The One's Who Live | Ep. 2- "Gone" Recap & Review
*WARNING- SPOILERS AHEAD!
Well first of all, sorry that this recap and review is so late, life got busy there for a sec.
So in episode one, we saw what happened to Rick post-blowing up the bridge in the OG series. This episode we see the adventures of Michonne post-bridge blowing up. I like the way this series is beginning telling the story of Rick and Michonne trying to make their way back to each other, and like I said in the episode one recap and review- I wasn't expecting the reunion to happen in the very first chapter.
We start with a flashback of Michonne helping a couple ultimately get back to their caravan. We get introduced to a few new characters, but I'm not going to get into much of them except for my new favorite Nat, played by actor Matthew Jeffers. I was glued to watching Nat every time he was on screen, every time he said something and the way he commanded the scenes he was in. I feel like Michonne was also gravitated towards him as well, she could sense that he was a good person after he came storming into the RV claiming they should have went our searching for the couple that Michonne helped. Both Nat and Michonne don't like the idea that this group leaves people behind claiming "you could lose a bunch of people by trying to save two" - paraphrasing.
Michonne, like Rick, wanted to continue her search for her family asap. When she eventually does, she comes across a gigantic walker hoard, she tries shooting whatever that missile launching gun that she obviously got from Nat. She eventually realizes she can't get passed this hoard and the caravan shows up and she actually goes back on the road with them to perhaps continue to strategize more.
We then see the caravan moving slowly as a helicopter passes overhead. Obviously we now relate helicopters in TWD to Jadis, and now Rick. The flips its position around and release what is apparently poison-type bombs. Michonne screams for the group to scatter as the caravan gets the poison bomb dropped on them. Obviously Michonne, Nat and a few others managed to escape into what looks like a home store. Michonne eventually leaves to get some oxygen tanks for people who get some clean breathing after being poisoned. When she returns, she discovers that everyone has died and turned into walkers, but where's Nat?! Michonne discovers him behind a counter with the protection of fire. We then enter what appears months fast-forwarding so that Michonne and Nat and gain their strength back to venture back out into the world.
After months of recovery, Michonne and Nat finally are ready to keep moving. They eventually see another - Rick's helicopter. This time Nat pulls out a very complex missile-type contraption and shoots a missile-type object. He says it's a dud, but if you refer back to episode one, it's the one that hits Okafor in the chest. The second one, however, doesn't miss as the heli goes down. This is the point in the story in which episode one and two collide. Michonne walks up to everyone who was on the chopper and kills them. Until she gets to Rick. When Michonne realizes it's him, she can't believe it- nor can he.
They embrace and I'll be honest, I had all the feels. Although as I have stated this was a very quick reunion, it still packed the punch of all of the other reunions, especially with these two characters. As the two share an intimate moment filled with emotions, Nat comes up also surprised that Michonne is hugging this man that was on one of the choppers that killed their people. Rick had explained to Michonne that "he's not with them" but also tells her that more are going to be coming and that they have to set up a scene in which Rick will have to turn her in. Meanwhile, my new favorite character gets shot from behind by one of the soldiers that managed to survive the crash. As the other choppers approach, Rick is pointing his gun at Michonne to make it look like they are enemies.
Michonne plays the part and eventually the two end up to the base in which Rick is stationed. He has promised her that they will eventually escape, together. Seems like these two are professional "biding our time" people, and I guess you have to be in an apocalyptic world in which you can't trust anyone. Michonne is "sentenced" to the grunt-type work that Rick was doing before he got moved up. The two also manage to slip away from crowds to have rendezvous in quiet areas. Where, Michonne discovers that Rick has a prosthetic hand.
Rick eventually makes his way back to his apartment, where guess who is waiting. Jadis aka the trash lady. Her and Rick have an interesting conversation as it seems like maybe she is ranked higher than Okafor in this organization as she knows every move Rick has made up to this point, including finding Michonne- who has faked he name to Dana. She tells Rick that she will see to it that he will be killed if he and Michonne even attempt to escape. As we still don't really know the plan this CRM organization has in this world, they try and hold on to assets.
Overall, I think this episode was a little stronger than the first. Again, I like the way they separated and told Rock's then Michonne's story post-bride blow u. If we are giving out letter grades, I'm suck between a B+ and an A-. It would get a B+ because of the way Rick is kind of sneaky about this organization he's with- although I understand why he's doing what he's doing. It gets an A- because I love the character of Nat and how, although small stature, has big ideas and wants to protect Michonne. I just hope the episodes get stronger as this short first season moves along!
