The Walking Dead | The One's Who Live | Ep. 3- "Bye" Recap & Review
*WARNING_ SPOILERS AHEAD!
Once again, sorry for the delay on the recap and review! Episode three begins with a mini flashback as Rick is walking through the town, Rick is already looking uncomfortable as if he's trying to spot week points where it might be easy to escape, or maybe just wondering how possible it is he's dreaming. Just then, someone asks him to pass a napkin, and guess who?! Our old pal Jadis! After some dialog, Jadis is quick to remind him that she could have let him die by the river. Rick is annoyed but at the same time seems somewhat thankful although he hates the fact that he can't leave by choice. We also find out that whatever organization Jadis was apart of, was different than the CRM and that people she and her group found, were handed over to the CRM. Confusing I know.
Rick then goes on to have a very weird conversation with Pearl at his apartment. She asks if he's here and he says he's here and that she should try and help him keep Michonne there. Anyway, we fast-foward to Rick re-entering his apartment to find Jadis sitting at his table, with a very different haircut, and the two get into a spat about if Rick and Michonne leave together, she will make sure everyone he loves is killed. A bit dramatic, but in low lit scenes, I guess that's what you go for. Rick pleads that Michonne does not belong there, and tried everything he can to strike some sort of deal to be had that could cover up any sort of escape. Jadies rejects with a smug hint of a smile every time.
We then see Michonne at the same wall Rick was way back in episode one about to clear some walkers. Keep in mind Michonne is narrating throughout some of this episode as if she's talking to Judith through the walkie-talkie. She still refers to Rick as the "brave man". We've always known a lot of our favorite characters to "play dumb" when they come into contact with new groups of people, to try and get a gauge about them, and Michonne is no different. Still posing a Dana Bethune, she puts a smile on her face while cleaning up walkers that she had fiercely sliced through moments earlier. As some times goes by, Rick pulls up and sees her making waves in the clear the walker department. You can maybe tell by the look on his face that he wants to "rescue" her so bad. It's weird isn't it? He wants to rescue her even though she has been...rescued. But we all know he wants to get them both, or at least her, to their family.
Somehow throughout this whole episode, Rick has been cooking up a plot to fake Michonne's death, possibly the plan he had for himself. He eventually runs into his BFF again Jadis. He clowns her haircut and she's again quick to remind him she saved his life and he dishes back, "well now you can save hers." Referencing Michonne, obviously. Rick then meets up with Michonne, she seems pissed, but Rick explains that he has to stay while she goes. With some fancy maneuvering, Rick "tricks" Michonne into thinking that they both will escape. No so fast Michonne, not so fast. Michonne thinks the plan is working until she shows up to the meeting spot, but no Rick. She finds a note explaining that he can't go with for this to work, Michonne ain't having this. Rick eventually spot her back at the wall clearing walkers.
Also at some point during the episode, Pearl gets promoted, but it almost seems like Rick manipulated her into moving up so he can somewhat pin Michonne's "death"/disappearance on her. Just like he was able to talk her into looking out for Michonne during her orientation. Rick, Pearl and Michonne head out to clear some walkers. Things get a bit sidetracked and Rick helps Michonne push a turret-type contraption through a herd. Pearl, meanwhile watching this, has Michonne in her sights, but thinks otherwise. I think that Pearl had this urge because I feel like she knows what Rick is trying to pull, and saw her way out of it, if Rick tries to pull anything else. Pearl doesn't trust Rick and/or especially Michonne. When the dust settles, Rick and Michonne share a nice moments next to some trees and Pearl ain't having this "rebel" type behavior.
At the end of the episode, Rick, to get through to Michonne, has to be a bit more... forceful and mean. He tells her that "It's over. Everything they once had is broken." The next scene we see them in a helicopter, and Michonne opens the door, grabs Rick and they both go tumbling out. Obviously Michonne has a plan for this crazy tactic, and I'll be interested in knowing what that is. I think that Michonne isn't buying Rick saying "it's over and broken", she spent so much time and energy to find him so that she can piece their family back together. And she'll be damned if she's going to give up that easy.
We've now entered the portion where we hand out the wonderful grades that I know you look forward to the most! For this episode I think I'd have to give it a strong C to C+. There was just so much going on and I found myself asking so many questions than having them answered. Like, what was the significance of Beale (played by actor Terry O'Quinn- awesome in "Lost" by the way), talking about a general, Hugh Mercer's sword that he had found. I am super excited to see more of Beale, and I have a feeling he might have a villain vibe to him. I'm also confused on how Jadis and Pearl moved up so quick in the CRM. It feels like it should take a while to move up the ranks throughout an organization that has a hard time trusting people. But in TWD universe as we all should know by now, has a funny way of going back and tackling some unanswered questions- or plot holes at the time.
