The College Basketball Season is winding down and the true standout during this season has been the St. John's Red Storm Men's Basketball program that has been irrelevant for a long period of time until this season led by Head Coach Rick Pitino who has a great resume on how to turn around college basketball programs from irrelevancy to relevance.

This past week for the first time in 33 years, the Red Storm won the Big East title for the regular season which shows how far this program has evolved from the doldrums to possible championship destination in the NCAAs. The win against Butler by score of 76-70 on the road clinched a share of the Big East title for the regular season in 33 years. RJ Luis Jr scored 24 points plus St. John's is ranked #7 in the top 25 polls you have to go back to December 1991 where the Red Storm has been ranked this high in the polls. On Saturday March 1st,St. John's can wrap up the outright league crown if they beat Seton Hall at Madison Square Garden or a Creighton loss at Xavier.

#8 Michigan State won on a walk off buzzer beater from half court by Tre Holloman to beat # 16 Maryland by score of 58-55 in a matchup of 2 ranked teams. As March approaches,will UConn make the NCAA Tournament on Selection Sunday because they may be on the bubble and the 2 time defending champions are unranked possibly their chances for a three-peat may be in serious jeopardy.

In The NBA landscape, how about the Detroit Pistons who have come a mighty long way from being the team with only 14 wins and 68 losses a season ago to now in the 6th spot in the Eastern Conference while being blazing hot with a 8-game winning streak to boot led by Head Coach JB Bickerstaff and a home grown talent in Cade Cunningham alongside Malik Beasley and company, the Pistons made a statement this week against the defending champion Boston Celtics winning by score of 117-97 on February 26th where Cade Cunningham had 21 points and 11 assists including 26 points from Malik Beasley. Currently the Detroit Pistons are 33-26 could they make a run in the 2025 postseason only time will tell.

The Los Angeles Lakers made a statement last Saturday by beating the previously red hot Denver Nuggets who came into this matchup with a 9-game winning streak at home but lost to the Lakers by score of 123-100. Luka Doncic had his best game yet with 32 points,10 rebounds and 7 assists then on Tuesday he faced his former team the Dallas Mavericks at home where the Lakers won by score of 107-99. Luka Doncic had a triple double:19 points,15 rebounds and 12 assists. Overall the Lakers are 4th in the Western Conference with a 36-21 record. It is possible the Lakers could make a possible run to the NBA Finals only time will tell.

On February 27th 1985,there was a monumental matchup between #2 Georgetown and #1 St John's at Madison Square Garden before the game, Head Coach John Thompson of Georgetown revealed a t-shirt in the same design as the lucky sweater that Head Coach Lou Carnesecca was wearing during the 19-game winning streak where to the chagrin of the laughs that came out of that it was the 8th matchup in the regular season between Georgetown's Patrick Ewing and St John's Chris Mullin.

Overall Georgetown won the Sweater Game by score of 85-69 to even the regular season series against St John's. These 2 teams would meet twice in the Big East championship game including the Final Four national semifinals where the Hoyas of Georgetown would win both matchups.
