The Week That Was | College Football Week 14 & NFL Week 13 Recap & Preview | NBA Season | NFL's Greatest Teams: 1984 San Francisco 49ers

The 2024 College Football Season is winding down with only one more week left in the regular season. Last week the biggest game on paper was #5 Indiana vs #2 Ohio State where Indiana had the most to prove because unlike the Buckeyes, the Hoosiers wasn't used to playing in this magnitude of a ballgame. Unfortunately Indiana failed the test losing 38-15 on the road at Ohio State now it is 29 consecutive losses for the Hoosiers of Indiana.


Quarterback Will Howard of Ohio State threw 2 touchdown passes including rushing for one including a 79 yard punt return touchdown by Caleb Downs. Ohio State displayed that Indiana wasn't ready for the big game such as this one. #8 Miami won 42-14 against Wake Forest in their season home finale. The defense which has been much maligned at times was able to get 5 sacks including a pick 6 by Mishael Powell for 76 yards. There were a few upsets in the Top 10 last week such as #9 Ole Miss losing on the road to unranked Florida Gators by score of 24-17.


Then at night the Crimson Tide of Alabama ranked #7 played on the road against unranked Oklahoma Sooners where they lost 24-3. The Sooners who were newcomers to the SEC this season basically salvaged their season to go over .500 with a 6-5 record and importantly become bowl eligible. Finally the other upset that stood out was #16 Colorado losing to Kansas on the road by score of 37-21. The defense of the Buffaloes just couldn't stop the rushing attack of Kansas led by Running Back Devin Neal who ram for 207 yards on 37 carries including 3 rushing touchdowns and 1 one touchdown catch.


Moving forward to the season finale of the regular season of College keep eyes on #2 Ohio State vs Michigan, #5 Notre Dame vs USC, #6 Miami vs Syracuse, #3 Texas vs #20 Texas A&M. The NBA is almost close to finishing out the month of November where the Cleveland Cavaliers still have the league's best record at 17-2 but suffered their second lost of the regular season at home blowing a 19 point lead against the Atlanta Hawks losing by score of 135-124 led by the playmaking and facilitating acumen of Point Guard Trae Young of The Atlanta Hawks who had a season high of 22 assists along with 20 points. Young for the third consecutive season has averaged in double digit assists in particular his best season yet in leading the league in assists at 12.5 assists evolving into the best assist man in the game.

Meanwhile, how about Lamelo Ball of the Charlotte Hornets obviously you don't hear anything from his father Lavar Ball who was the hype man for Lonzo Ball several years back but Lonzo Ball's career has been injury prone but Lamelo Ball is definitely having his best season scoring wise averaging 31.1 points a game which is second in the league including averaging 6.9 assists. The Charlotte Hornets are currently 6-12 so far this season.


In the college basketball landscape, what is going on with the 2-time defending champion Connecticut Huskies who had an uncharacteristic time in the Maui Invitational where they lost 3 consecutive games such as losing in overtime to unranked Memphis:99-97,73-72 to unranked Colorado and blown out by unranked Dayton:85-67. Now the Huskies are 4-3 including Forward Alex Karaban was taken to the hospital for a head injury against Dayton.


Over in the Terry's Chocolate Vegas Showdown, #1 Kansas beat #11 Duke by score of 75-72. In the Player's Era Festival,#9 Alabama beat #6 Houston by score of 85-80 in overtime. In the Maui Invitational, #4 Auburn beat #12 North Carolina:85-72.


Moving forward inside the NFL, the season is entering the fourth quarter of the regular season as the month of December looms. Last week the Pittsburgh Steelers were upset by the Cleveland Cavaliers losing 24-19. The Kansas City Chiefs barely beat the Carolina Panthers by score of 30-27. The Houston Texans were upset by the Tennessee Titans losing by score of 32-27. The Detroit Lions showed why they are the league's best team winning on the road against the Indianapolis Colts:24-6. On Thanksgiving Day, the Lions held on to win 23-20 at home against the Chicago Bears. The Lions extended their winning streak to 10 games and now are 11-1.


The Denver Broncos are playing well beating the Las Vegas Raiders by score of 29-19. Rookie Quarterback Sensation Bo Nix of The Denver Broncos continues his impressive play by setting a rookie touchdown record breaking the club rookie record of 14 touchdown passes that was set by Marlin Briscoe. Nix threw for 273 yards and 2 touchdown passes. Nix has 16 touchdown passes this season. The 49ers continues to flounder as they fell to 5-6 losing 38-10 to the Green Bay Packers. The Seattle Seahawks won a big game at home against the Arizona Cardinals:16-6. Now the Cardinals and Seahawks are tied for first place in the NFC West going into the month of December. The Philadelphia Eagles continues to surge beating the Los Angeles Rams to make it 7 consecutive wins winning 37-20. Running Back Saquon Barkley of Philadelphia Eagles had a banner game rushing for 255 yards and 2 touchdowns rushing including touchdowns of 70 and 72 yards.


Looking into the month of December, keep eyes on the Eagles/Ravens match up at 4:25pm this Sunday featuring 2 of the best runners in the game: Saquon Barkley of Philadelphia Eagles and Derrick Henry of Baltimore Ravens.

For The NFL's Greatest Teams Feature, the 1984 San Francisco 49ers who won 15 games losing only 1 game to the Pittsburgh Steelers which was the first team to accomplish this feat and this was the second Super Bowl championship of the 80s. This was a team led by Head Coach Bill Walsh the mastermind of the West Coast offense and Quarterback Joe Montana who threw 28 touchdowns featuring Running Backs Wendell Tyler had 1,262 yards including 7 rushing touchdowns and Roger Craig who had 649 rushing yards including 7 touchdowns. The Wide Receivers were Freddie Solomon and Dwight Clark including Tight End Russ Francis. On the defensive side, the 49ers was rugged with pass rushing specialist Fred Dean and a great secondary led by Ronnie Lott, Eric Wright, Carlton Williamson and Dwight Hicks who were all Pro Bowlers.


Defensive End Dwaine Board had 10 sacks and 1 fumble recovery. The 49ers defense was strong allowing the fewest points during the regular season(227 points) In the postseason, the 49ers beat the New York Giants by score of 21-10 then shutout of the Chicago Bears: 23-0. Then in Super Bowl 19, the Niners nailed the Miami Dolphins by score of 38-16. Joe Montana was Super Bowl MVP throwing 331 yards and 3 touchdown passes including Running Back Roger Craig scored 3 touchdowns featuring one rushing touchdowns and 2 touchdown catches(7 catches,77 yards,2 touchdowns). This 1984 San Francisco 49ers was the best team in franchise history even without Wide Receiver Jerry Rice and John Taylor.
