The Week That Was | College Football Week 2 & NFL Week 1 | Overview of College Football Week 3 & NFL Week 2
The College Football Weekend of Week 2 was the anatomy of the upsets that was microcosm of what stood out especially number 5 Notre Dame losing at home to Northern Illinois by score of 16-14. This game was a classic example of a trap game/emotional letdown. Quarterback Riley Leonard was inept for Notre Dame just a atrocious performance overall offensively for the Irish because the defense of the Irish did their job. Other notable upsets were number twenty-three Georgia Tech losing on the road to unranked Syracuse by score of 31-28,Iowa State winning against number twenty-one Iowa: 20-19, Illinois beating number nineteen Kansas: 23-17.
What looked on paper as the best game of the day between number three Texas vs number ten Michigan didn't live up to the hype because the Longhorns hooked and shooked the Wolverines: 31-12. What a dominant performance on the road who has a knack of snapping long home winning streaks like a year ago against Alabama(21 consecutive home wins) and this year Michigan (23 consecutive home wins). Quarterback Quinn Ewers of Texas threw 3 touchdown passes. For Michigan a few other winning streak came to an abrupt end(29 Regular Season Wins Big Ten Record and 16 consecutive wins nation's longest winning streak).
Texas also did something that is rarely done in college football annals and that is beat Michigan and Alabama on the road in consecutive seasons since Notre Dame accomplished that feat back in 1979 and 1980 with different quarterbacks. Texas made a statement that they are contenders for the playoffs and a national championship.
Meanwhile number fourteen Tennessee made a big statement against NC State winning big by score of 51-10. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava of Tennessee threw for 276 yards including 2 touchdown passes and a 31 yard touchdown run. Let's look at the Overview of Week 3 of College Football. The slate of Week 3 are not eye popping but beware of the upset keep your eyes on Alabama at Wisconsin even Oregon at Oregon State in the Civil War rivalry. The game to watch is number twenty-four Boston College vs number six Missouri. This matchup may be the best game to watch.
Let's look at NFL Week 1 where the majority of the games were not well played maybe due to the lack of reps and playing time in the preseason for the 1st team. When you have the Pittsburgh Steelers kick 6 field goals against the Atlanta Falcons winning 18-10 it displays mediocrity on the offensive end despite Quarterback Russell Wilson being inactive. How about the Chicago Bears offense that didn't score a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans and still won the game:24-17. The Bears trailed by 17 points and still won the game by kicking 3 field goals by Kicker Cairo Santos, Jonathan Owens scored on a blocked punt on special teams, Tyrique Stevenson scored on 43 yard pick 6. Only 3 teams have a game like this when no offensive touchdown was scored and trailed by 17 points. The lifetime NFL record is 3-1,225 whenever this occurs putting the Bears in rarefied air.
The best game of Week 1 was the Rams vs Lions matchup where the Lions held a 17-3 lead but the Rams rallied to take the lead 20-17 when Quarterback Matthew Stafford threw a 9 yard touchdown pass to Wide Receiver Cooper Kupp (14 catches,110 yards,1 touchdown). But the Lions was able to score a field goal to the game at 20 to send the game to overtime. In overtime the Lions won on a walk off game winning touchdown by Running Back David Montgomery from 1 yard:26-20. Standouts from this game was Wide Receiver Jameson Williams catching 5 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown.
Defensive Player of The Week for Week 1
Defensive End Greg Rousseau of Buffalo Bills 3 sacks,3 tackles for loss,3 solo tackles against the Arizona Cardinals
Offensive Player of the Week
Quarterback Baker Mayfield of Tampa Bay Buccaneers
24-30 289 yards 4 touchdown passes 0 interceptions
Overview of Week 2 of The NFL
Keep eyes on the rematch of the Divisional Playoff matchup between the Detroit Lions vs the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Look for Jameson Williams for Detroit to be a game breaker at Wide Receiver against the Buccaneers secondary. The Chiefs will continue their winning ways against the Cincinnati Bengals it will be close whenever Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Quarterback Joe Burrow face each other.
