The Week That Was | College Football Week 5 & NFL Week 4 Recap | MLB Playoffs Recap | Remembering Pete Rose and Dikembe Mutumbo
The Week That Was in College Football from last Saturday featured an instant classic between #2 Georgia and #4 Alabama where Alabama had a 30-7 lead but the Georgia Bulldogs offense was able to have a big rally by taking the lead:34-33 when Quarterback Carson Beck of Georgia threw a 67 yard touchdown pass to Wide Receiver Dillon Bell. But Sweet Home Alabama responded with a touchdown pass from Quarterback Jalen Milroe to Wide Receiver Ryan Williams who is a true freshman for a 75 yard touchdown to go ahead by score of 41-34.
Alabama prevailed ending 3 winning streaks that Georgia had coming into this monumental matchup:42 game regular season winning streak,28 game SEC game winning streak, and a 16 road game winning streak. Alabama is the new #1 after the win over Georgia. For Georgia they will have to navigate through a rugged schedule like playing at Texas on October 19th for example including Tennessee, Florida, Georgia Tech and Ole Miss to remain in the 12 team playoff hunt. Ole Miss meanwhile lost as the #6 team at home against the Kentucky Wildcats by score of 20-17. Moving forward of the overview for this Saturday's slate of games keep eyes on #9 Missouri vs #25 Texas A&M.
For the NFL landscape, the first quarter of the 2024 NFL season concluded in September which was very strange and bizarre for example who predicted that the Washington Commanders would be in sole possession of first place in the NFC East at 3-1 or the Minnesota Vikings would be unbeaten at 4-0 in first place in the NFC North as Quarterback Sam Darnold is playing at a MVP level with 11 touchdown passes and 3 interceptions.
The Ravens are back on track at 2-2 due to the vintage running of Running Back Derrick Henry who ran for 199 yards on 24 carries and 2 touchdowns:1 running and 1 catching against the previously unbeaten Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football winning 35-10.
NFL Offensive Player of The Week: Running Back Derrick Henry of Baltimore Ravens: 24 carries,199 yards 1 touchdown run and 1 touchdown catch. Opponent: Buffalo Bills
NFL Defensive Player of The Week: Linebacker Troy Anderson of Atlanta Falcons:16 tackles and 1 interception for touchdown against the New Orleans Saints.
Let's look at MLB Baseball Playoff Recap as the New York Mets continue to display their grit and resiliency especially in the doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves where Francisco Lindor hit a 2 run homer to give the Mets a 8-7 lead which would be the final score to clinch a playoff berth. But it got more dramatic when in the Wild Card Round against the Milwaukee Brewers with the Series tied at 1-1,in the top of the 9th inning with the Mets trailing 2-0 after back to back home runs by Pinch Hitter Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick for the Milwaukee Brewers in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Pete Alonso was the Mets hero when he hit a opposite field 3 run home run to right field to give the Mets a 3-2 lead then an insurance run made the score:4-2 which would result in the final score as the Mets advanced to the Divisional Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Predictions: Mets in 5 over the Phillies.
For the rest of the Divisional Series the Detroit Tigers who beat the Houston Astros in 2 games:2-0 which was a shocker because Houston Astros are used to being in the NLCS or World Series. The Tigers will face the Cleveland Guardians: Tigers in 5. The Royals of Kansas City eliminated the Baltimore Orioles so they face the New York Yankees. Yankees in 5. Finally, the Los Angeles Dodgers face the San Diego Padres which should be arguably the best Divisional Series. The Dodgers win in 5.
Pete Rose aka Charlie Hustle passed away this past week unfortunately he never was inducted into Cooperstown for the MLB Baseball Hall Of Fame when he was alive so Rose may not be inducted while he is deceased. Pete Rose was part of the Big Red Machine with the Cincinnati Reds winning 2 consecutive World Series titles in 1975 and 1976 respectively including being the all-time hits leader(4,256 career hits). He also won a World Series championship with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1980. The body of work of Pete Rose as a hitter, gamer and player speak for itself but betting on baseball was Rose's mistake that he didn't admit to until years later was his detriment where he wasn't able to have a Hall of Fame Induction on behalf of his illustrious career in baseball leaving behind what could have been.
Last but not least, remembering center Dikembe Mutumbo, who passed away this last week leaving the greatness he displayed on and off the court. Mutumbo was drafted in the 1991 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets as the 4th overall pick out of Georgetown. Mount Mutumbo was his trademark nickname due to his defense as one of the more decorated shot blocking defensive players the NBA has ever seen. Mutumbo was a 4x Defensive Player of The Year. In 1994 when his team, the Denver Nuggets upset the Seattle Super Sonics in Seattle pulling off at the time the greatest upset in NBA history which the iconic moment was when Mutumbo laid on the floor with the basketball lifted up in his hands as the signal of joy. Dikembe Mutumbo was part of a synonymous lineage of Georgetown centers like Patrick Ewing ,Alonzo Mourning and Othella Harrington.
Beyond his playing career in the NBA, the humanitarian work he has done is more significant because he gave back to improving conditions in his native Democratic Republic of Congo. Also building hospitals and donating personally 3.5 million towards the hospital's construction of a 300 bed, $29 million on the outskirts of his hometown :Congolese capital of Kinshasa. Overall, Mutumbo was a true humanitarian at the highest level and quality. Rest In Peace, Mount Mutumbo.
