Two Historic Performances in 1 Night
Joel Embiid and Karl-Anthony Towns made NBA history on January 22, 2024. Joel Embiid scored 70 points in 37 minutes. Joel was 24-41 from the field and made 21-23 free throws as well. Not only did Embiid score a lot of points, but he also added 18 rebounds and 5 assists to his historic game.
This wasn’t just a regular Monday night game for the Sixers. This was Victor Wembanyama's first game against the reigning NBA MVP. Many wondered how Wembanyama would match up against the 30 PPG scorer and we got a glimpse of it last night. Embiids’ 70 points is a career-high for him and now puts him in the top 14th in the NBA most points scored in 1 game lost. Embiid has missed 10 games this season which will make it incredibly difficult for him to win the MVP award. If Embiid can somehow not miss more than 6 more games he is more likely than not the favorite to win the MVP award.
Karl-Anthony Towns scored 63 points last night in a loss against the Charlotte Hornets. This performance ranks 47th all-time in total points scored in 1 game. Karl-Anthony Towns also made 10 three-pointers which is the 37th most threes made in a game ever. It is the most threes in a game made by a center. Losing to the 10-wins Hornets is not ideal but in a couple of years no one will be asking if the TimberWolves won the game or not. All that matters is the points and three-pointers made. All on the 18th anniversary of Kobe's 81 point performance vs Toronto in 2006.
