UFC 300: Gaethje vs Holloway for BMF Title

UFC 300 is starting to look like the card we were all wanting to see! A lot of fans waited with bated breath for the UFC brass to announce Conor McGregor vs Michael Chandler for UFC 300, but to the dismay of many, we’re going to have to wait until international fight week to see the return of McGregor.

After the hopes of that fight fell through, UFC fans were clamoring for some answers regarding UFC 300 – who’s fighting? What could possibly be better than UFC 299 if there’s no McGregor? UFC 300 is far from complete, but it’s looking much, much better now that the BMF title is on the line.

Not everyone is big on the BMF belt – some think it’s tacky and that’s completely fair. What’s irrefutably exciting, though, is Max Holloway, once again, jumping up to lightweight. This time, he’ll be taking on Justin Gaethje, the man who won the vacant BMF title at UFC 291 when he landed a head kick that had Dustin Poirier making his bed in the Shadow Realm.

Max Holloway has done all a number-one contender can do at Featherweight. He’s time and time again beaten fighters on the come-up, but he’s yet to, on paper at least, defeat the incumbent champion, Alexander Volkanovski. As he waits for the tides to shift or for a fourth fight against Volk, depending on how his fight against Ilia Topuria plays out, Holloway is once again bouncing up to lightweight to give the fans one of the most interesting match-ups that we could think of.

Gaethje is 0-2 when lighting for the lightweight championship, but he’s far from abandoned ship on the idea of wearing that belt. But, for the meantime, a detour to fight Max Holloway and keep busy is a pretty gangster move.

So, how does this fight look? When Max jumped up to lightweight back in 2019, he held his own, but he was noticeably undersized. To take on Justin Gaethje, ‘Blessed’ will need to bulk up a little bit in order to bridge any discrepancies going into this lightweight

bout.

What’s also very interesting is that Gaethje is a prolific finisher and maybe one of the hardest-hitting lightweights in the history of fighting. But, you look at Max, who has fought some of the heaviest-hitting featherweights and this guy has never even been knocked down. This is a bout between a granite chin and some heavy limbs.

Holloway is one of, if not the best boxer in the UFC. Gaethje has some incredible hands and deadly kicks. It’s hard to tell how this fight will go, but it’s easy to know that you’ll need to clear the schedule and watch it.
